In my experience, the big differences between the 2k and 3k are these (also see above): -2k has better/easier programming function, especially with MIDI and things. -3k sounds better because it has the preamp which gives it that classic, warm sound. IMO, the best idea is to get an SDD-2k for the MIDI functionality and put it in the loop of a Psionic Audio Triad, which is a clone of the preamp section of the SDD-3k. You get the warmth of the 3 plus the programmability of the 2, on average for less than a 3k would cost anyway.

I have 2 SDD-2000's that are going to be installed in my L.A. Sound Design rack. While they do not sound identical to the 3000 due to the input preamp of the 3K, the 2K is very close sonically with the modulation settings.
